KOR Korean Street Food: Bibimbap Review

KOR Street Food is a new fast food restaurant in Market Mall's food court.

They serve various popular Korean foods, including "kordogs" (an impressive Korean variation of corndogs with cheese/sausage/chewy-rice inside), mandoo/mandu (Korean dumplings), and of course bibimbap - a bowl of rice with assorted meats, vegetables, and sauces. It seems like the K-wave expanded from K-pop and K-dramas into K-food (delicious).

As I pondered their menu, my eyes slowly widened after gazing upon the words "choose vegetables [no limit]". Gone were the days of stressfully considering each vegetable combination - finally, I could have them all. This cemented my choice of ordering the "make your own bibimbap".

Not only was my choice of vegetables limitless, but I felt exhilarated at the fact that if I were a paragon of health, I could select a base of spring mixed greens rather than the all-too-standard carbohydrates that regularly plague fast-food menus. Alas, since I am not a paragon of health, I decided to strike a balance and choose brown rice as my base (a fine offering indeed).

As for the other steps, I chose bulgogi and gochujang sauce. It goes without saying that I requested all the vegetables in my bibimbap :)

The cup/bowl of bibimbap was a bit smaller than I expected, but still of a decent size (unfortunately I didn't get a side photo of it). Post-mixing, each bite was quite pleasant with the freshness and crunch of vegetables as well as some egg yolk and nicely cooked bulgogi beef. After consuming about half of the food, the spiciness of the gochujang caught up with me and I had to slow down. As someone with an average (or below) spice tolerance, I can say that you should not be concerned about the spice level unless you have difficulty handling normal amounts of spiciness (in which case you can choose a different sauce).

Overall, this bibimbap was pleasant and healthy for the price and a special find in a mall food court. It was not a revelation in flavour or creativity, but I recommend trying the food here next time you're at Market Mall (especially for those uninitiated to Korean food).

Miam-miam!

5 Things to do Before the UCalgary Semester Starts

I know, I know... summer is almost over already and it feels like it's barely started. Regardless, it's only a bit more than a week before classes start again (less if you're doing Block Week, which I tried last year ), so here are some reminders before the school year begins. Set up your calendar For UCalgary students, download your class times through the D2L portal and  import your them to your preferred service (mine is Outlook) : Personally, I like to colour code and label lectures/tutorials/labs separately on my calendar like so: Of course, many people also just take a screenshot of their timetable and set it as a wallpaper or save it somewhere easy to access; that can work too :). Put in your Course Overload Request(s) This is a pretty urgent and important one: make sure you check your degree requirements. If you're still waitlisted or not enrolled for a course that you need  to take this year, then you should submit a course overload request ASAP. At UCalgary fo...

9 Not-So-Obvious Dorm Essentials

These aren’t necessarily things you need to pack in advance (you could buy them after moving in), but they are things that I personally found useful which aren’t usually listed in traditional packing lists. Earplugs or Sleep Sound Machine Dorms unfortunately often have the issues of noisy neighbours and loud garbage trucks or snow plows at strange hours. If you find this bothering you, invest in some earplugs (much cheaper at Shoppers or Amazon than in the on-campus pharmacy) or a sound machine. If regular earplugs are uncomfortable for you, you can try “women’s” earplugs (they might fit better for you regardless of gender). Humidifier
