The following are some tips that have proved useful to me (and most likely other students) during my short time in university so far, and they may not be heavily advertised or known so I had to look into them! Without further ado, here they are:
- You can get free resume reviews from career services through email (https://www.ucalgary.ca/student-services/careers/students/submit-your-resume-review)
- Check out a calendar of club events at https://suuofc.campuslabs.ca/engage/events (beware, not all clubs post events there)
- There are dental, vision, and doctor services all in Mac Hall. You can see your student insurance details at https://www.mystudentplan.ca/uofcalgary/en/home, and make sure you register for Canada Life and enter your address to bill your optometrist or submit claims (https://www.mystudentplan.ca/uofcalgary/en/making-a-claim)
- There are free counselling services available for students, including single sessions for any support you may be seeking (https://www.ucalgary.ca/wellness-services/services/mental-health-services/counselling)
- Job postings and other faculty-specific and career services are available through Elevate (https://elevate.ucalgary.ca/)
- If you live in residence, use Archibus (http://myfacilities.ucalgary.ca/) to submit any maintenance requests. They respond quite quickly to a variety of issues (broken A/C, bad lightbulb, broken window, etc.) and it's generally free
- If there's a course you really want to take but it's currently full, you can use https://www.uofcnotify.me/ to get an email when a spot opens on the waitlist or the class itself. When you receive an email, try to login as soon as possible to snag a spot
- If you live in residence, you can see your outstanding fees by logging into your resident portal (https://ucalgary.starrezhousing.com/StarRezPortalX) and clicking "Accounts". Sometimes this information is more complete than the financials in your student portal.
- Students can attend many drama, dance, and music performances for free through the Claim Your Seat program (https://arts.ucalgary.ca/creative-performing-arts/news-and-events/school-events/claim-your-seat)
I hope you learned something new from this post, and if you have any feedback, questions, or tips I haven't discovered, please comment below :).
Until next time!
Ana
