Lucky Supermarket's Food Court: A Hidden Gem?

Serving bubble tea, pho, vermicelli, BBQ duck, gelato, and more all in one place, Lucky Supermarket Calgary's "StreetFood Kitchen" is a rare fast food experience that can appeal to a different audience than usual :).

As a place to go grocery shopping, it's not too crowded and has some special items (we got some "snow mango pie" and soursop jam). On average, it might be a little pricier than a store like T&T but they have enough sale items and differentiation to make up for that.

On our visit, we ordered three dishes: the satay beef vermicelli, a rice + three item combo (we chose two types of beef and one pork), and beef rendang.
Vermicelli (left), Beef Rendang (right), Buffet Rice Combo (bottom)

As you can see, the portions are good at a price of about ~$14 each. Every dish had its own special flavours and was extremely delicious.

The satay beef vermicelli definitely has the most vegetables of any dishes we ordered which gave it a nice freshness. I've never had a vermicelli I didn't like, and this was no exception. The beef was cooked nicely and the sauce was flavourful.

All meats in the three item combo were perfectly cooked. One of the beef styles was very pleasantly juicy and the pork had a crispy skin (my favourite!).

Finally, the beef rendang was so special and miam miam! It was very pleasantly fragrant and had a nice spiciness to it. The flavour was great (I can't speak to it's authenticity) and even as I am writing this, I find myself craving it.

If you're looking for a special shopping and dining experience, check out the area as there is also Seafood City across the street which is a huge Filipino supermarket (a whole 'nother story :).

'Til next miam mam,
Ana

5 Things to do Before the UCalgary Semester Starts

I know, I know... summer is almost over already and it feels like it's barely started. Regardless, it's only a bit more than a week before classes start again (less if you're doing Block Week, which I tried last year ), so here are some reminders before the school year begins. Set up your calendar For UCalgary students, download your class times through the D2L portal and  import your them to your preferred service (mine is Outlook) : Personally, I like to colour code and label lectures/tutorials/labs separately on my calendar like so: Of course, many people also just take a screenshot of their timetable and set it as a wallpaper or save it somewhere easy to access; that can work too :). Put in your Course Overload Request(s) This is a pretty urgent and important one: make sure you check your degree requirements. If you're still waitlisted or not enrolled for a course that you need  to take this year, then you should submit a course overload request ASAP. At UCalgary fo...

9 Not-So-Obvious Dorm Essentials

These aren’t necessarily things you need to pack in advance (you could buy them after moving in), but they are things that I personally found useful which aren’t usually listed in traditional packing lists. Earplugs or Sleep Sound Machine Dorms unfortunately often have the issues of noisy neighbours and loud garbage trucks or snow plows at strange hours. If you find this bothering you, invest in some earplugs (much cheaper at Shoppers or Amazon than in the on-campus pharmacy) or a sound machine. If regular earplugs are uncomfortable for you, you can try “women’s” earplugs (they might fit better for you regardless of gender). Humidifier
