Chicko Chicken Review (Korean Fried Chicken)

Is Korean Fried Chicken as good as it sounds?

Chicko Chicken is a popular Korean Fried Chicken chain in BC that recently opened its first Calgary location in Harvest Hills (next to T&T Supermarket).

This location definitely has more of a take-out vibe with enough seating for only about 2-3 groups of people. I ordered the half & half (about $25) which is half sizes of two different flavours, and chose the soy garlic and cheese snow flavours (not spicy). You can also choose boneless or bone-in, but not both. I opted for boneless.

Soy garlic on the left and cheese snow on the right

The chicken was perfectly cooked and had a nice crunch to it. Both flavours were slightly sweet (I personally prefer wings less sweet, but it's certainly a style many enjoy and I still liked it). The soy garlic wings were yummy as expected, and the delicious cheese snow flavour was quite interesting. It had a sort of cheese powder on top that gave an interesting artificial cheese taste and powder texture to the palate; I found it quite a special and enjoyable flavour but I can imagine it being divisive.

I was worried that boneless would only include chicken breast, but there were delicious chicken thighs as well. It was a substantial amount of chicken and I would recommend getting a drink with it (a can of pop or water is only a bit over a dollar here). Finally, the fact that there are mainly Korean employees and customers add to the authenticity of the place.

I give these wings a MIAM-MIAM (delicious) rating! I've certainly never had KFC like this before, and I affirm that the answer to my initial question (is it as good as it sounds) is yes :).

Thanks for reading,

Ana

5 Things to do Before the UCalgary Semester Starts

I know, I know... summer is almost over already and it feels like it's barely started. Regardless, it's only a bit more than a week before classes start again (less if you're doing Block Week, which I tried last year ), so here are some reminders before the school year begins. Set up your calendar For UCalgary students, download your class times through the D2L portal and  import your them to your preferred service (mine is Outlook) : Personally, I like to colour code and label lectures/tutorials/labs separately on my calendar like so: Of course, many people also just take a screenshot of their timetable and set it as a wallpaper or save it somewhere easy to access; that can work too :). Put in your Course Overload Request(s) This is a pretty urgent and important one: make sure you check your degree requirements. If you're still waitlisted or not enrolled for a course that you need  to take this year, then you should submit a course overload request ASAP. At UCalgary fo...

9 Not-So-Obvious Dorm Essentials

These aren’t necessarily things you need to pack in advance (you could buy them after moving in), but they are things that I personally found useful which aren’t usually listed in traditional packing lists. Earplugs or Sleep Sound Machine Dorms unfortunately often have the issues of noisy neighbours and loud garbage trucks or snow plows at strange hours. If you find this bothering you, invest in some earplugs (much cheaper at Shoppers or Amazon than in the on-campus pharmacy) or a sound machine. If regular earplugs are uncomfortable for you, you can try “women’s” earplugs (they might fit better for you regardless of gender). Humidifier
